CENTRE FOR ETHICS, POLITICS AND SOCIETY

The Centre for Ethics, Politics and Society is the only research centre in Portugal exclusively dedicated to the areas of Political Philosophy and Ethics. The Centre brings together PhD researchers, post-doctoral researchers and other associated researchers in these areas of knowledge.
Political philosophy lines of research focus on a cluster of four areas: (a) political liberalism and human rights; (b) distributive justice, unconditional basic income, property-owning democracy, and pre-distribution; (c) theories of democracy, public interest, and the right to information; (d) populism, representation, and political rhetoric and its historical dimension.
The ethics line of research focuses on applied ethics and applied philosophy, namely (a) nudge theory and behavioral economics; (b) the concept of food (c) the philosophy of technology and human enhancement.
Recent lines of research have also been launched focusing on the ethics of AI, the ethics of war, the ethics of immigration; workplace democracy, neo-republican approaches to domination, the social philosophy of exclusion, and political epistemology.
The Centre publishes Ethics, Politics & Society, an open access, peer-reviewed international journal that publishes high-quality contributions in the Centre’s areas of expertise.
The Centre also organises an intensive series of international events, including the Meetings on Ethics and Political Philosophy and the Summer School in Political Philosophy and Public Policy, and hosts a Programme of Research Seminars, aimed at discussing the work of its researchers, as well as conferences presented by guest speakers.
The international panel of the Foundation for Science and Technology that assessed the Centre gave it the classification of “Very Good”.
