GIORGIO AIROLDI
CEPS FULL RESEARCHER
Giorgio Airoldi is a full researcher at the Centre for Ethics, Politics, and Society (CEPS), where he leads a project funded by the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia focused on the critical analysis of evolutionary mechanisms and explanations, with particular emphasis on mental traits such as sentience and cognition. He is also a member of the research project NORMABioMed (Normativity and Mechanistic Approaches in the Philosophy of Biological and Biomedical Sciences: from Medicine to Animal Cognition), based at the Spanish National University (UNED). He is a member of the Society for Analitic Philosophy (SAF), the Spanish Society of Logic and Philosophy of Science (SOLOFICI), the Spanish Metaphysical Network (REM) and the Iberoamerican Society of Philosophy of Biology (AFIBI).
His research interests center on the critique of attempts to naturalize ethics and political decision-making through biological and medical sciences, with a special focus on the role of animal sentience as a foundation for animal ethics.
Prior to joining CEPS, he was co-principal investigator of the EVORISE project (Exploring the Evolutionary Origins of Sentience) at the Center for the Philosophy of Science (CFCUL), University of Lisbon (2022–2024), and a researcher in the MECABIOSOC project (Mechanisms across the Sciences: from Biology to the Social) at UNED (2018–2021).
He holds a PhD in Philosophy of Science, with a dissertation on evolutionary mechanisms underlying the emergence of biological complexity (Evolution and the Architecture of Life). He also holds a Master’s degree in Philosophy of Science and a Degree in Philosophy from UNED, as well as a Degree in Industrial Engineering from the Politecnico di Milano. In addition, he earned an MBA from Instituto de Empresa in Madrid and spent an Erasmus year at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB).
