Pedro Miguel Martins
CEPS DEPUTY DIRECTOR
Since graduation, Pedro Miguel Martins’ areas of interest, study, and research have focused on the field of politics. During his master’s degree, he developed research on the history of conservative political thought in Portugal and Europe. He wrote a doctoral thesis on Portuguese Republican thought that was awarded and published. He has published several articles on conservative social and political thought, namely Edmund Burke and, more recently, Auguste Comte. Since 1995, he has been teaching, at the University of Minho, courses for undergraduate and master’s degrees, fundamentally in two complementary fields (history of ideas and philosophy, especially political philosophy), such as the following: Portuguese Mentalities and Culture, Portuguese Political Thought, History of Political Ideas, Theories of Democracy, Philosophy in Portugal and Political Philosophy.
More recently, he has developed research within contemporary political philosophy, namely on “merit and desert in theories of justice” and on populism and the redefinition of democratic theories. He has supervised PhD and MA students in political philosophy and political theory and in the history of ideas.
