JOÃO CARDOSO ROSAS
CEPS FULL RESEARCHER
João Cardoso Rosas studied in Porto and Florence. He is an associate professor at the University of Minho, where he has mainly taught Political Philosophy and related subjects and supervised master’s, doctoral, and post-doctoral students. His initial research interest was the political thought of Karl Popper and other 20th-century liberal authors. Later, he focused on the study of John Rawls’ theory of justice and his critics. He has been particularly interested in issues related to doctrinal pluralism and the value of stability in democracy. In recent years, his work has turned to the analysis of ideologies and the study of the history and philosophy of human rights. Most of his books and other academic publications fall within these fundamental interests.
He has been a guest professor in Porto and Lisbon, and a visiting professor or researcher in Madrid, Oxford, and Providence. He was President of the Portuguese Political Science Association and President of the Portuguese Philosophical Society. He was involved in the creation of several courses at the University of Minho, including the Master’s in Political Philosophy. In 2008, he formed the Political Theory Group and, in 2017, he established the Centre for Ethics, Politics and Society.
