ROBERTO MERRILL wins the Essay Prize of the Portuguese Society of Philosophy 2019

It was revealed today that the 2019 SPF Essay Prize jury unanimously decided to award the prize, worth €3,000, to the book Rendimento Básico Incondicional: Uma Defesa da Liberdade, by Roberto Merrill, researcher at the Center for Ethics, Politics and Society (CEPS), together with fellow CEPS collaborators Sara Bizarro, Gonçalo Marcelo and Jorge Pinto.

According to the SPF, “the jury underlined that the work bases the creation of an unconditional basic income within the philosophical tradition of political and individual freedom, aiming at promoting equal opportunities for all citizens. In defense of the proposal, several local experiences are analyzed and how it will be possible to generalize and universalize them, aiming at combating situations of global urgency, for example in the environmental domain and access to decent living conditions. The controversial nature of the proposal is duly underlined by the authors with the discussion of the multiple arguments for and against, on the social and economic theory levels.”
