Workshop «Subversões Filosóficas: Feminismo, Género e Outros Percursos»

October 19, 2026 @ 11:00 - 17:00

The workshop devoted to the book Subversões Filosóficas: Feminismo, Género e Outros Percursos [Philosophical Subversions: Feminism, Gender and Other Paths] (Sistema Solar/Teatro Praga, 2025) marks the first event of the University of Minho chapter of MAP – Minorities and Philosophy. The session brings together four researchers from the University of Minho who, from distinct angles, think about and work on feminism through philosophical, literary and legal discourse. By bringing these perspectives together, the event proposes an interdisciplinary dialogue on the ways in which feminist thought questions, displaces and subverts categories, languages and institutions. The workshop closes with a lecture by Camila Lobo, one of the book’s editors, followed by a discussion open to all participants.

Programme:

11am-12:30pm-: talks by Ines Zampaglione (CEPS) and Ana Bessa Carvalho (CEHUM)
1pm-3:30pm: talks by Miriam Rocha (JusGov) and Márcia Oliveira (CEHUM)
4pm-5pm: talk by Camila Lobo (IFILNOVA) and final discussion

Synopsis: The main aim of this book is to accompany the reader on a stroll through some of the possibilities created by bringing philosophy and feminism together.
No collection of essays is ever complete. The one presented here is no exception. It is a collection of philosophical and feminist essays, or philosophical essays on feminism, or feminist essays on philosophy, if the distinction can be discerned at all. It is, therefore, an excursion into feminist philosophy, one that travels some of its most important paths (from epistemology to ontology, ethics and the very revision of the philosophical canon), that opens new shortcuts, but necessarily leaves many others unexplored. Like all philosophical thought, feminist philosophy is by definition an open, critical field, holding within itself both the capacity to branch out ad infinitum and the capacity to return to itself in an exercise of self-reflection.

Feminism did not enter academia, and philosophy departments in particular, to become just another field of study, much less an appendix to established fields. Feminism entered academia, to a large extent, to call it into question from an eminently practical perspective, that is, one rooted in the social world. It did not do so, of course, naively or on a whim, as some suggest. It did so because it identified a close connection between the exclusion of women and other marginalised groups from academic settings and certain theoretical assumptions conveyed there. In this context, it adopted an attitude of subversion towards institutional theoretical production. [Camila Lobo]
