Ira Katznelson // Is Liberal Socialism Possible? Reflections on “Real Utopias”

The 8th session of the PREDPOD online seminar, will take place on April 5, at 4pm (Lisbon/London time). In this session the following article will be discussed: ‘Is Liberal Socialism Possible? Reflections on “Real Utopias”’ (2020). Ira Katznelson, our invited speaker, will make a brief presentation of the main ideas of his paper which will be followed by a reply by a discussant to be announced and a debate with the participants.

Ira Katznelson (speaker): Ira Katznelson is Ruggles Professor of Political Science and History at Columbia University. His 2013 book, Fear Itself: The New Deal and the Origins of Our Time, received the Bancroft Prize in History and the Woodrow Wilson Foundation Award in Political Science. His most recent book is Southern Nation: Congress and White Supremacy After Reconstruction, co-authored with David Bateman and John Lapinski. A fellow of the British Academy, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. and the American Philosophical Society, Ira is a former president of the American Political Science Association and the Social Science Research Council. He earned his Ph.D. in history at the University of Cambridge, where he served as the 2017–18 Pitt Professor of American History and Institutions.
