The 11th session of the Predistribution and Property-Owning Democracy online seminar, will take place June 22nd, at 5pm (Lisbon time). In this session we will be discussing a chapter of ‘Legal Duty and Upper Limits: How to Save our Democracy and Planet from the Rich’ (2020). Bernd Reiter, our invited speaker, will make a brief presentation of the main ideas of the chapter, followed by a reply by a discussant to be announced and a debate with the participants.

Bernd Reiter (speaker)

Bernd Reiter is a political scientist and a professor of Latin American Studies for the Department of Classical and Modern Languages and Literatures at Texas Tech University. He currently serves as the Fulbright Distinguished Chair of Public Policy, Brazil, 2021-22. He is the editor of the Routledge Decolonizing the Classics Special Book. Before joining Texas Tech, he has served as the director of the Institute for the Study of Latin America and the Caribbean at the University of South Florida. His recent publications include Decolonizing the Social Sciences and Humanities (2022), Legal Duty and Upper Limits: How to Save our Democracy and Planet from the Rich (2020), Constructing the Pluriverse (2018), among others. He earned his Ph.D. in comparative politics from the City University of New York’s Graduate Center. He has been a visiting professor at the Universidad del Norte, Colombia and the University of Kassel, Germany; a research fellow at the Free University of Berlin, Germany; the Erasmus Mundus Visiting Scholar at the Barcelona Institute of International Relations in Spain, and a research associate at Harvard University. In 2019, he was awarded the Distinguished Alum Award of the Political Science Program of the Graduate Center, City University of New York. His work focuses on race, democracy, and decolonization.
