CEPS SEMINAR SERIES IN ETHICS AND POLITICAL PHILOSOPHY
Nicola Piras, “Social Ontology and Health Eating Policies”
Abstract:
The increasing awareness in Western societies of how diets and foods can influence human health has brought the topic of healthy eating policies to the center of public debate. The purpose of this talk is to expand the toolbox of policy makers working on those policies by introducing two additional devices, borrowed from social ontology. The first is what I call ontological targeting. It aims to determine the entity that should be targeted by a healthy eating policy, e.g., a diet, a macronutrient, or a particular food. The second is a social pressure analysis, which can assist policymakers in evaluating how social groups can influence individual eating behaviors. Lastly, I will discuss how these tools can work together in a complementary manner to enhance the effectiveness of a healthy eating policy aimed at reducing meat consumption.
