A grim future for workers? Technological developments and work-related domination

February 6, 2025 - February 7, 2025

In recent years, we have witnessed several changes that impacted significantly both labour markets and workplace environments. Many of these changes have been a result of both technological developments, but also changing norms and preferences around work resulting from the experience with the COVID-19 pandemic. These changes can be clustered around two main topics: (1) changes in the supply and demand of labour; (2) changes in the workplace and in work-related relationships.

To understand how we can fare these challenges, our workshop wishes to address this question by focusing on the following related issues:

  • What are the key changes in the workplace which are worth considering? What (if anything) is problematic about these changes?
How do these technological developments impact workers´ freedom? Can such developments contribute to a more equal society – and, if so, how?
  • Given recent developments, how is the power in the workplace distributed? To what extent, if any, do these changes contribute to (dis)empower workers?
  • What (if any) kind of domination is at stake? Is it related to the economic structure? Or to individuals’ lack of resources which forces them to accept bad work conditions?
  • How can we consider instances of domination when it comes to technological developments? Who is dominated and who is the dominator? How does remote working impact the power relationship between workers and bosses?
  • What are the normative issues around AI-based human resources processes (recruitment and selection, training and evaluation procedures)?
