The session will feature two speakers:
David Ragazzoni (Columbia University)
“From Fascism to Populism, between Liberalism and Socialism: Norberto Bobbio’s Democratic Theory (early 1940s-early 1990s)“
The paper explores the life and times of Bobbio’s democratic thought, embracing a longue durée perspective to contextualize, excavate, and connect its various phases (from the collapse of Fascism to the advent of populism) and its signature attempt to weave together equality, liberty, and justice.
Samuel Zeitlin (University College of London)
“Carl Schmitt, Political Theology, and the History of Political Thought”
The paper will consider what Carl Schmitt understands by political theology, how Schmitt approaches the study of major figures in the history of political thought (Machiavelli, Hobbes, Rousseau), and what, if anything, these two aspects of Schmitt’s work may have to do with one another.
