António Baião
DOCTORAL STUDENT
Short bio:
I’m a Ph.D. student in Social and Political Philosophy at the University of Minho, under the supervision of Professor Roberto Merrill, where I’m also a researcher at the Centre for Ethics, Politics, and Society. My main research interests are the metrics and theories of justice. I started developing these topics in my Contemporary Philosophy Master’s dissertation, supervised by Professor Sofia Miguens, entitled “Como avaliar a qualidade de vida num contexto Social e Político? Bens Sociais Primários, Recursos ou Capabilities” that I have finished in 2016. In the same year, I participated in the MLAG Seminars organized by Mind, Language, and Action Group of the Institute of Philosophy of the University of Porto. In that sequence, I have been invited to include an abridged version of that presentation – “Amartya Sen: avaliar o nível de vida em termos capabilities” in the seminar’s compilation. Later I also joined MLAG as a researcher (until 31/12/2017). In 2017 I participated in the VIII Meetings on Ethics and Political Philosophy of the University of Minho with the paper “Ronald Dworkin and Philippe Van Parijs: How far is the Equality of Resources from an Unconditional Basic Income?”. There I have introduced to my research the theories of the UBI. A new element regarding the Master’s dissertation that has, along with metrics based on previously mentioned capabilities, a highlighted place in my plan for the Ph.D.
