SARA CRUZ
DOCTORAL STUDENT
Sara Cruz dedicated her master’s to the study of Just War Theory (JWT), with special emphasis on the conflicting approaches of what is now known as orthodox JWT, epitomized by the works of Michael Walzer, and the contemporary revisionist critique, headed (mainly) by Jeff McMahan’s work. From the latter, her interest have grown towards other underlying concepts in the just war debate such as the ethics of self and others defense, intervention, obedience, and consent. This has remained as the research field of her preference, particularly due to the unsettling times we’re living, the challenges posed by the prevalence of state to non-state conflicts worldwide, the growing introduction of technologies such as uninhabited aerial vehicles and autonomous lethal weapons in contemporary warfare, and the moral and ethical dilemmas that arise from the widespread proliferation of such weapons and their use in past and ongoing conflicts. Notwithstanding, she is also interested in history of political thought, theories of justice, feminism, and animal ethics.
