June 24, 2024 @ 9:00 - 17:30

WORKSHOP ON POPULISM AND HISTORY: INSIGHTS FROM THE PAST FOR TODAY’S DEBATE
CEVIPOF, Sciences Po, June 24, 2024, 9:00 am – 5:30 pm

The workshop is supported by CEVIPOF (Sciences Po), the ANR Project THEOVAIL, and the FCT (Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology) project, “Populism, Demagoguery and Rhetoric in Historical Perspective”. PDRHP is a research project dedicated to the study of populism, demagoguery, and rhetoric in historical perspective. The project is funded by the Foundation of Science and Technology (Portugal) and based at the Centre for Ethics, Politics and Society of UMinho under the coordination of Giuseppe Ballacci.

Organising committee:: Giuseppe Ballacci, Samuel Hayat and Thomás Zicman de Barros

Details: The debate on populism has been extensive over the past decade, with scholars suggesting we may be living in a populist age. However, defining contemporary populism remains controversial due to the term’s rich polysemy. This workshop aims to explore the often-overlooked historical dimension of populism, which originated in Russia and the United States 150 years ago and played a significant role in post-war Latin America. By examining these roots and earlier periods, such as the Renaissance and classical eras, scholars will connect contemporary discussions of populism with insights from social history and the history of political thought.

Speakers: Nadia Urbinati (Columbia University), Camila Vergara (University of Essex), Clara Ramas (Universidad Complutense de Madrid), Federico Tarragoni (Université de Caen), Felipe Linden (École des hautes études en sciences sociales), Giuseppe Ballacci (CEPS), Samuel Hayat (Sciences Po) and Thomás Zicman de Barros (CEPS).
