JOANA PINTO
DOCTORAL STUDENT
Joana Pinto is a PhD candidate in Political Philosophy at the Centre for Ethics, Politics and Society, and her doctoral project focuses on the application of public reason to the functioning of political parties. Her research contends that public reason must be reconciled with both the deliberative and aggregative roles that political parties fulfil within democratic systems. In this context, her work engages with theories of public reason and political legitimacy, normative theories of political partisanship, and the role of parties in democratic deliberation, aiming to bridge ideal and non-ideal approaches in contemporary political theory.
She holds a Master’s degree in Political Philosophy (2023) from the University of Minho, having completed her dissertation studying how political parties can either advance or undermine Rawlsian public reason and, more broadly, the project of political liberalism. Her academic performance was distinguished with the highest classification awarded in the programme that year. She also holds a Bachelor’s degree in Law (2021), obtained from the same institution, having pursued an interdisciplinary academic path that connects normative political theory with legal and institutional analysis.
