ALEXANDRE CARVALHO

DOCTORAL STUDENT

Alexandre Carvalho is a PhD candidate in Philosophy at CEPS, with an affiliation to the Department of Philosophy at the University of Barcelona, under a mixed doctoral scholarship funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). His research focuses on the analysis of structures of domination and exploitation related to labour, critically examining the contradictions between the logic of capital and democratic principles. His doctoral project, “Towards Pro-Labor Justice: Rethinking Labor Relations in the Sphere of Domination and Exploitation”, draws on contributions from analytical Marxism, republican theory, and normative political philosophy, with particular emphasis on theories of surplus labour exploitation, the commodification of labour, and the feasibility of mechanisms such as workplace democracy and exit options.

He holds a BA in Philosophy from the University of Minho, where he received a merit scholarship, and an MA in Philosophy with a specialisation in Political Philosophy from NOVA University of Lisbon, where he focused on workplace democracy and contemporary political philosophy. His main research interests include social and political philosophy, analytical Marxism, republicanism, and theories of labour exploitation.
