Whose Capital? Property-Owning Democracy and the Socialist Alternative\n3-5 July 2018\nUniversity of Minho\, Braga – Portugal\n \n\nIn recent years there has been a resurgence of interest in issues at the intersection of political philosophy and public policy. In particular\, attention has increasingly turned to the question of what kind of institutions and policies would be needed in order to create a significantly more just society. \nFollowing past summer-schools on topics such as justice between generations (2010)\, democratic virtues (2011)\, radical democracy (2012)\, basic income (2013)\, predistribution and property-owning democracy (2014)\, the ethics of banking (2015)\, the commons (2016)\, the philosophy of work (2017)\, the 9th summer-school will be dedicated  to property and capital in property-owning democracy and socialism. \nOriginally prompted by John Rawls’ A Theory of Justice (1971\, 1999)\, and later in Justice as Fairness. A Restatement (2001) the concept of property-owning democracy has gained interest in the last decade as an alternative to welfare-state capitalism.\nAccording to Rawls\, the aim of property-owing democracy is  “to disperse the ownership of wealth and capital\, and thus to prevent a small part of society from controlling the economy\, and indirectly\, political life as well. By contrast\, welfare-state capitalism permits a small class to have a near monopoly of the means of production” (2001: 139).\nThe  widespread ownership of productive assets\, as well as of human capital\, is thus not about assisting the most disadvantaged by means of welfare policies and redistribution\, but instead to enable citizens to realize their life-plans in a condition of relative economic equality and reciprocity.\nThe idea of a property-owning democracy bears important similarities with other attempts among liberal democratic socialists and left-libertarians  to contain the perverse effects of market concentration of wealth and  ensure a pre-distributive entitlement to citizens irrespective of their working status. At the same time\, property-owning democracy has been criticized for assuming that the capitalist system can be effectively reformed to ensure social justice. \nThese topics are of growing interest within academia\, where they features prominently in recent debates in philosophy\, history\, law\, political science\, and economics. In this summer school we will discuss insights emerging from philosophical reflection on the nature of these topics and think about normative principles guiding the organization of a property-owning democracy and its socialist alternative\, as well as its possible public policies\, such as the allocation of capital grants. \n\n[/vc_column_text][vc_btn title=”Visite Event Website” shape=”square” color=”danger” align=”center” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2F9thsummerschoolbraga.weebly.com%2F”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:3rd Braga Colloquium in the History of Moral and Political Philosophy
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row css=”.vc_custom_1657019492801{margin-top: 30px !important;margin-bottom: 30px !important;}”][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1705432035085{margin-bottom: 50px !important;}”] \n3rd Braga Colloquium in the History of Moral and Political Philosophy\n\nUniversity of Minho\nBraga\, Portugal \n1-2 February 2018 \nTheme: Radicalism and Compromise \n\n\n\nThe Center for Ethics\, Politics and Society (CEPS) – formerly the Political Theory Group – of the University of Minho\, is pleased to announce the 3rd  Braga Colloquium in the History of Moral and Political Philosophy\, an international annual conference to be held every year in January at the University of Minho in Braga\, Portugal. The purpose of this conference series is to promote the study of the tradition of political and moral philosophy and its legacy in shaping our institutions\, culture and beliefs. But it will focus on how this tradition can contribute to tackling the challenges our societies are facing today. Every year the conference will have a specific theme\, which will be chosen by taking into consideration the current global political situation. \nIn line with the spirit behind this new series of conferences\, the third edition of the Braga Colloquium in the History of Moral and Political Philosophy will be dedicated to explore the ideas of “radicalism” and “compromise”.\nPolitics has frequently been defined as the art of the possible or the art of compromise. More dramatically\, it has been depicted as the realm of Faustian deals and tragic choices. Max Weber famously wrote that the political call demands endurance in the face of disappointment. It is the realm of frustration and sacrifices\, of fragile equilibriums between fiat justitia and raison d’état. \nSometimes the existence of political structures of accountability relaxes the dependence on character\, reputation\, and honor among conflicting parties. Reasonable civic duties suffice to deflate social conflicts and to compensate offended actors. Lacking these institutions\, integrity becomes non-negotiable for social trust. \nOn occasion\, however\, a social order of tolerance would not emerge without sacrificing the moral integrity of former heroes that we now consider dogmatic integrists. Conversely\, this institutional order of tolerance also allows the political space for the reconstruction of identity claims for recognition that derive their radical strength from their intrinsic aversion to political settlement. \nFrom a historical point of view\, our political languages and attitudes towards compromise\, negotiation\, bargaining\, and agreement have changed in a myriad of contexts and traditions. As so did our conceptions of what seemed once worth sacrificing or defending. \nThe aim of this Colloquium is to bring to the fore philosophical treatments from various philosophical traditions of these aspects of political activity\, and to do so from an historical perspective that might help us shed light on the shape of things as they are now. \nThe Colloquium welcomes original explorations of political conflicts that illuminate these dimensions of conceptual change in radicalism and compromise from different traditions and perspectives. \n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:2nd Braga Colloquium in the History of Moral and Political Philosophy
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row css=”.vc_custom_1657019492801{margin-top: 30px !important;margin-bottom: 30px !important;}”][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1705432289586{margin-bottom: 50px !important;}”] \n2nd BRAGA COLLOQUIUM \nIN THE HISTORY OF MORAL AND POLITICAL PHILOSOPHY\n“Lying and Hypocrisy in Politics and Morality”\n\nUniversity of Minho\nBraga – Portugal\n12-13 January 2017 \n\n\n\n\n\nThe Political Theory Group of the University of Minho is delighted to announce the II Braga Colloquium in the History of Moral and Political Philosophy: an international annual conference held every year in January at the University of Minho in Braga\, Portugal. The purpose of this conference series is to promote the study of the tradition of political and moral philosophy and its legacy in shaping our institutions\, culture and beliefs. In this important respect\, the conference series will focus on how this tradition can contribute to tackling the challenges our societies are facing today. Every year the conference will focus on a specific theme\, which will be chosen by taking in consideration the current political situation in Europe (and beyond). \nIn line with the spirit behind this new series of conferences\, the second annual Braga Colloquium in the History of Moral and Political Philosophy will be dedicated to exploring the themes of “Lying and Hypocrisy in Politics and Morality.” \n“No one has ever doubted that truth and politics are on rather bad terms with each other\, and no one\, as far as I know\, has ever counted truthfulness among the political virtues. Lies have always been regarded as necessary and justifiable tools not only of the politician’s or the demagogue’s but also of the statesman’s trade.”\n(Hannah Arendt) \nHypocrisy\, though inherently unattractive\, is also more or less inevitable in most political settings. Political life is often a world ethically apart from normal human interactions. This contributes\, however\, to the creation of a cleavage between citizens and politicians. Those citizens who are disaffected with democracy and politicians do not question only their competence: they doubt their promises\, because they question the quality of the political class in terms of their truthfulness and basic honesty\, and this seems to hinder citizens’ ability to judge politicians. This problem is magnified in contemporary liberal democracies: a political system that\, on the one hand\, has transparency as one of its foundational values\, and on the other\, that is deeply influenced by the media and logics of spectacularization as it promotes a continuous search of consent and electoral competition. The desire to cut oneself off from political hypocrisy—by denouncing it\, owning up to it\, or seeking some sort of insulation from it—reminds us not to approach the problem of hypocrisy with false expectations about what can be achieved\, ignoring the nuances that pervade political life. \nWe should not conflate the moral and political realms. Yet there is something both ethically and politically troubling about the ease with which modern political thinkers isolate norms of citizenship from the meaning and purpose of our lives as a whole: this habit of compartmentalizing “citizenship talk” from more holistic ethical aspirations discourages serious reflection on the ethical basis of civic life\, an essential safeguard against the rise of manipulative and self-serving political ideologies.\nWe invite scholars interested in these topics to propose papers that interrogate the history of moral and political thought in order to illuminate our current predicament. \n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

In particular\, attention has increasingly turned to the question of what kind of institutions and policies would be needed in order to create a significantly more just society. Following past summer-schools on topics such as a basic income (2013)\, predistribution and property-owning democracy (2014)\, the ethics of banking (2015)\, this year’s summer school will be devoted to the commons. The topic of the “commons” is an expanding issue of interest within academia\, where it combines different and complementary disciplines (philosophy\, history\, law\, political science\, economy\, …). It is also a very important discussion outside academia. The “commons” is a social space where people can enter and leave freely; in which they relate as equals; and in which they work cooperatively\, to solve a problem\, meet a need\, or just enjoy creativity for its own sake. In this school we will explore the ways in which society has a strong responsibility to protect a sufficient commons and to ensure that anyone holding an asset removed from the commons pays compensation to everyone else. \n\n[/vc_column_text][vc_btn title=”Visite Event Website” shape=”square” color=”danger” align=”center” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fcommonsexplore.weebly.com%2F”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:BRAGA COLLOQUIUM  IN THE HISTORY OF MORAL AND POLITICAL PHILOSOPHY
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row css=”.vc_custom_1657019492801{margin-top: 30px !important;margin-bottom: 30px !important;}”][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1705432562741{margin-bottom: 50px !important;}”] \nBRAGA COLLOQUIUM  IN THE HISTORY OF MORAL AND POLITICAL PHILOSOPHY\n“Representation\, the People\, and Political Leadership”\n\nUniversity of Minho Braga – Portugal\n14-15 January 2016 \nKeynote speaker\nNadia Urbinati (Columbia University)\nhttp://bragacolloquium.weebly.com \n\nCall for papers\nThe Political Theory Group of the University of Minho is delighted to announce the inaugural event of the Braga Colloquium in the History of Moral and Political Philosophy: an international annual conference to be held every year in January at the University of Minho in Braga\, Portugal. The purpose of this new conference series is to promote the study of the tradition of political and moral philosophy and its legacy in shaping our institutions\, culture and beliefs. In this important respect\, the conference series will focus on how this tradition can contribute to tackling the challenges our societies are facing today. Every year the conference will focus on a specific theme\, which will be chosen by taking in consideration the current political situation in Europe (and beyond).\nIn line with the spirit behind this new series of conferences\, the first edition of the Braga Colloquium in the History of Moral and Political Philosophy will be dedicated to explore the ideas of “representation”\, “the people”\, and “political leadership”. Since Thomas Hobbes\, we have come to understand that the idea of the ‘sovereign people’\, and its expression by the state through the idea of representation\, is a fiction that makes possible the collective exercise of power on the large scale of modern states. Modern thinkers such as Locke\, Montesquieu\, Rousseau\, the Federalists\, Burke\, and Weber or\, more recently\, Pitkin\, Habermas\, Rawls\, Arendt\, or Pettit\, have offered a rich panoply of ways of constructing such a fiction. But also in the ancient tradition of\, say\, Plato\, Aristotle\, Cicero\, or Marsilius of Padua\, when the question of ‘representation’ was still not explicitly thematized\, we can find suggestive insights to think about this topic. Importantly\, these different fictional accounts of ‘the sovereign people’ yield different political outcomes\, different forms of state\, different forms of political participation\, different relationships between the people and their political representatives\, and so on. At the same time\, each of these fictions are based on some critical assumptions regarding\, for instance\, the capacities needed to engage in politics and how they are distributed among the people\, the source of political authority\, the level of (in)commensurability between different worldviews\, what it means to represent in political terms\, and so on. \nThe deep crisis of representative institutions in Europe’s and the concomitant rise of new (or supposedly new) forms of populism have made it absolutely urgent to reassess how we articulate the relationship between our ideas of ‘representation’\, ‘the people’\, and ‘political leadership’\, in particular taking into consideration which political outcomes our conceptions engender and on which political assumptions they are based.  We invite scholars interested in these topics to propose papers that interrogate the history of moral and political thought?ancient\, modern\, and contemporary?in order to illuminate our current predicament. \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

In particular\, attention has increasingly turned to the question of what kind of institutions and policies would be needed in order to create a significantly more just society. This summer school will be devoted to the ethics of banking. The first topic will be devoted to recent financial history\, ethical issues that have arisen\, problems of moral hazard\, contagion effects\, etc. This is basically centered around the question of what the function of finance is in society\, or what it should be. A second topic will focus on various players in the industry and their respective ethical issues: banks\, central banks\, insurance companies\, etc. We’ll look at things such as insider trading\, and debate the (i)morality of it\, and/or such practices as frontrunning\, churning\, etc. Still another topic will be devoted to Professor Boudewijn de Bruin’s own research on epistemic virtues\, debating the claim that ethics in finance ought to be sensitive to competence issues rather than (just) on greed or bonuses. We’ll look into corporate epistemic virtues\, rotation policies\, organizational opposition\, credit rating agencies\, and the way they outsource epistemic responsibility. A final topic on ethics management tools will be included as well\, focusing on recent initiatives surrounding the bankers’ oath in the Netherlands\, etc. \n\n[/vc_column_text][vc_btn title=”Visite Event Website” shape=”square” color=”danger” align=”center” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fbankingethics.weebly.com%2F”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

In particular\, attention has increasingly turned to the question of what kind of institutions and policies would be needed in order to create a significantly more just society. \nContemporary circumstances of rising inequality and severe austerity add to the urgency of thinking creatively\, in a philosophically-informed way\, about alternative economic arrangements. Initiatives such as Occupy have protested the apparent lack of political imagination in response to the financial crisis and its consequences\, underscoring the need to consider and explore alternatives. \nThis summer school will examine one broad current of thinking about alternatives associated with the idea of “predistribution”. It will look in particular at John Rawls’s idea of a “property-owning democracy”; at the relationship between strategies of “predistribution” and “redistribution”; and at specific policy proposals such as universal basic income\, basic capital\, and models of “high road” capitalism. A key issue to consider will be whether predistribution strategy can be thought of primarily in terms of  “human capital”\, jobs\, and wages or needs also to encompass productive and financial assets (and\, if so\, in what ways). A further issue to be explored is the trade-off between equality and efficiency in the different social arrangements of a property-owning democracy\, a basic income guarantee\, and the traditional welfare state. \n\n[/vc_column_text][vc_btn title=”Visite Event Website” shape=”square” color=”danger” align=”center” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fpredistributionschool.weebly.com%2F”][/vc_column][/vc_row]
