SUMMARY:10th Summer School in Political Philosophy and Public Policy
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row css=”.vc_custom_1657019492801{margin-top: 30px !important;margin-bottom: 30px !important;}”][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1657031258292{margin-bottom: 50px !important;}”] \nDemocracy\, Corporations\, and the Limits of the Market\n9-11 July 2019\nUniversity of Minho\, Braga – Portugal\n \n\nSince the end of the Cold War\, capitalism has triumphed globally\, and market economies have ruled unchallenged. Criticisms that capitalism exacerbates inequalities have been brushed aside in the name of the freedom of enterprise\, while limits to its inherent logic have been suppressed by systematic policies of deregulation and privatization. Despite recurrent periods of recession\,  economic liberalism became hegemonic in the 1980s through the 1990s\, conquering and converting much of the European social-democracy to its assumptions and policies. Then the 2007-2008 financial crisis hit. The long-lasting consequences of soaring inequalities and public and private debt became manifest\, as well as the inability of neoliberal policies to provide essential public goods to large portions of national communities affected by the crisis. Many have come since then to question capitalism and the unfettered rule of the markets. Political philosophers have insisted that\, even within the constraints of a capitalist market economy\, a more just society is not only economically and politically feasible but morally mandatory and have been keen to explore new avenues of alternative public policies. In this context\, some authors have recently explored the idea of the private company as a political entity in its own right\, which ought to be subject to legal and moral rules and limits analogous to those which exist for other kinds of political communities\, such as nation-states. The private company doesn’t have to be\, nor should it be\, a morality-free or justice-free space in liberal democratic societies.\nWhile in previous editions of the Summer School we have discussed alternatives to the existing capitalist regime such as property-owning democracy (2014) and democratic socialism (2018)\, in this edition we seek to discuss more largely the legitimacy of free market capitalism and the political role and structure of the private company. \n\n[/vc_column_text][vc_btn title=”Visite Event Website” shape=”square” color=”danger” align=”center” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2F10thsummerschoolbraga.weebly.com%2F”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:4th Braga Colloquium in the History of Moral and Political Philosophy
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row css=”.vc_custom_1657019492801{margin-top: 30px !important;margin-bottom: 30px !important;}”][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1705431716035{margin-bottom: 50px !important;}”] \n4th Braga Colloquium in the History of Moral and Political Philosophy\n\nThe Politics of Emotions\nHistorical Insights and Contemporary Challenges \nJanuary 29-30\, 2019\n University of Minho\, Braga – Portugal \nCentre for Ethics\, Politics and Society \n\n\nKeynote speakers\nRichard Bellamy               Duncan Kelly\n(European University Institute)     (University of Cambridge)\n\nThe Centre for Ethics\, Politics and Society (CEPS) of the University of Minho is pleased to announce the 4th Braga Colloquium in the History of Moral and Political Philosophy\, an international annual conference held in January/February at the University of Minho in Braga\, Portugal. The purpose of the series is to promote the study of the tradition of political and moral philosophy and its legacy in shaping our institutions\, culture and beliefs. It will focus on how this tradition can contribute to tackling the challenges our societies are facing today.\n\nThe 4th edition of the Braga Colloquium will be explore the role of emotions in politics. Political upheavals in recent years have raised worries about the role emotions should play in politics. The Brexit referendum and the US presidential elections in 2016\, the rise of populist and authoritarian movements and the resurgence of independence movements in Europe\, the factional disregard for objective facts in the post-truth era\, are all examples of the multifaceted and potentially unpredictable ways emotions shape politics: they catalyze participation in political struggles leading to partisan politics\, influence collective deliberation sparking negative reactions against specific groups\, promote uncritical identification with political leaders thus triggering forms of caesarism. If on the one hand they can encourage biased\, unreflective and irrational behaviors\, emotions may also play a positive role in the public life\, for instance\, forging bonds of solidarity in the name of important political values\, such as emancipation\, equality and justice. More in general\, emotions constitute an inevitable dimension of politics to the extent that they are entangled with our beliefs and judgments. In helping to establish a connection between general principles and particular judgments\, they provide the motivational ground to move from belief to action.\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:9th Summer School in Political Philosophy and Public Policy
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row css=”.vc_custom_1657019492801{margin-top: 30px !important;margin-bottom: 30px !important;}”][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1657031127499{margin-bottom: 50px !important;}”] \nWhich Property? Whose Capital? Property-Owning Democracy and the Socialist Alternative\n3-5 July 2018\nUniversity of Minho\, Braga – Portugal\n \n\nIn recent years there has been a resurgence of interest in issues at the intersection of political philosophy and public policy. In particular\, attention has increasingly turned to the question of what kind of institutions and policies would be needed in order to create a significantly more just society. \nFollowing past summer-schools on topics such as justice between generations (2010)\, democratic virtues (2011)\, radical democracy (2012)\, basic income (2013)\, predistribution and property-owning democracy (2014)\, the ethics of banking (2015)\, the commons (2016)\, the philosophy of work (2017)\, the 9th summer-school will be dedicated  to property and capital in property-owning democracy and socialism. \nOriginally prompted by John Rawls’ A Theory of Justice (1971\, 1999)\, and later in Justice as Fairness. A Restatement (2001) the concept of property-owning democracy has gained interest in the last decade as an alternative to welfare-state capitalism.\nAccording to Rawls\, the aim of property-owing democracy is  “to disperse the ownership of wealth and capital\, and thus to prevent a small part of society from controlling the economy\, and indirectly\, political life as well. By contrast\, welfare-state capitalism permits a small class to have a near monopoly of the means of production” (2001: 139).\nThe  widespread ownership of productive assets\, as well as of human capital\, is thus not about assisting the most disadvantaged by means of welfare policies and redistribution\, but instead to enable citizens to realize their life-plans in a condition of relative economic equality and reciprocity.\nThe idea of a property-owning democracy bears important similarities with other attempts among liberal democratic socialists and left-libertarians  to contain the perverse effects of market concentration of wealth and  ensure a pre-distributive entitlement to citizens irrespective of their working status. At the same time\, property-owning democracy has been criticized for assuming that the capitalist system can be effectively reformed to ensure social justice. \nThese topics are of growing interest within academia\, where they features prominently in recent debates in philosophy\, history\, law\, political science\, and economics. In this summer school we will discuss insights emerging from philosophical reflection on the nature of these topics and think about normative principles guiding the organization of a property-owning democracy and its socialist alternative\, as well as its possible public policies\, such as the allocation of capital grants. \n\n[/vc_column_text][vc_btn title=”Visite Event Website” shape=”square” color=”danger” align=”center” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2F9thsummerschoolbraga.weebly.com%2F”][/vc_column][/vc_row]
