SUMMARY:11th Summer School in Political Philosophy and Public Policy
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row css=”.vc_custom_1657030591882{margin-top: 30px !important;margin-bottom: 50px !important;}”][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1657031330481{margin-bottom: 50px !important;}”] \nThe workings of Capital: Perspectives on Exploitation in Law\, Labor\, and Distribution\n6-9 July 2020\nUniversity of Minho\, Braga – Portugal + Online\nImmigration is a reality of life: people are born in a country and sometimes they decide – or are forced – to emigrate. In the modern era\, we witnessed religiously motivated migration to the New Continent\, and then economically motivated migration to “The Frontier”. If the question of how open or closed borders should be is not an entirely new one\, it happens that the political context of the question has changed. The world today is divided into territories under the jurisdiction of different states\, in a fragile balance\, and the preferred destinations of emigrants are liberal democracies with a social state. \n\nDiplomats and statesmen often explain border control by resorting to the idea of state sovereignty – also forged in modern times. There is an ongoing debate between those who uphold more open borders and those who deem it justifiable to close them.\nThis is now\, however\, no longer only a theoretical debate but a reality in plain sight all over the world.\nA key reason for maintaining border controls is explained by the associative nature of liberal democracies: the right to self-determination\, which authorizes citizens to accept some migrants and not others\, because citizens have a say in the type of society they want to live in.\nEurope\, however\, until recently celebrated the free movement of people\, but has now closed many of its internal borders\, and jealously maintains its external borders.\nThere are reasons to think that\, beyond the present situation\, immigration may have an unprecedented impact in the future. This is a serious possibility that raises even more questions of public policies concerning how to face religious tolerance\, even freedom of religion\, and in general\, the issues germane to the sharing of the burdens and benefits of life in common. \n\n[/vc_column_text][vc_btn title=”Visite Event Website” shape=”square” color=”danger” align=”center” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2F11thsummerschoolbraga.weebly.com%2F”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:10th Summer School in Political Philosophy and Public Policy
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row css=”.vc_custom_1657019492801{margin-top: 30px !important;margin-bottom: 30px !important;}”][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1657031258292{margin-bottom: 50px !important;}”] \nDemocracy\, Corporations\, and the Limits of the Market\n9-11 July 2019\nUniversity of Minho\, Braga – Portugal\n \n\nSince the end of the Cold War\, capitalism has triumphed globally\, and market economies have ruled unchallenged. Criticisms that capitalism exacerbates inequalities have been brushed aside in the name of the freedom of enterprise\, while limits to its inherent logic have been suppressed by systematic policies of deregulation and privatization. Despite recurrent periods of recession\,  economic liberalism became hegemonic in the 1980s through the 1990s\, conquering and converting much of the European social-democracy to its assumptions and policies. Then the 2007-2008 financial crisis hit. The long-lasting consequences of soaring inequalities and public and private debt became manifest\, as well as the inability of neoliberal policies to provide essential public goods to large portions of national communities affected by the crisis. Many have come since then to question capitalism and the unfettered rule of the markets. Political philosophers have insisted that\, even within the constraints of a capitalist market economy\, a more just society is not only economically and politically feasible but morally mandatory and have been keen to explore new avenues of alternative public policies. In this context\, some authors have recently explored the idea of the private company as a political entity in its own right\, which ought to be subject to legal and moral rules and limits analogous to those which exist for other kinds of political communities\, such as nation-states. The private company doesn’t have to be\, nor should it be\, a morality-free or justice-free space in liberal democratic societies.\nWhile in previous editions of the Summer School we have discussed alternatives to the existing capitalist regime such as property-owning democracy (2014) and democratic socialism (2018)\, in this edition we seek to discuss more largely the legitimacy of free market capitalism and the political role and structure of the private company. \n\n[/vc_column_text][vc_btn title=”Visite Event Website” shape=”square” color=”danger” align=”center” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2F10thsummerschoolbraga.weebly.com%2F”][/vc_column][/vc_row]
